The Chinese Center within Megatrend University was founded in October 2012 in cooperation
with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Serbia. A large number of
distinguished guests attended the opening ceremony, one of them being the then ambassador
of the People’s Republic of China to Serbia, Mr. Zhang Wansue.
The Chinese Center was established with the aim of improving academic, cultural, or political
and economic cooperation between the two peoples that are tied by decades-long friendship.
The first activity of the Chinese Center towards the cooperation was the organization of Chinese
language courses, which are delivered both by professors from Serbia, as well from China. Over
400 students have so far enrolled in various Chinese language courses (from the beginner to
advanced levels), during which, in addition to the knowledge of the Chinese language, they have
also gained the knowledge on Chinese culture, history and tradition. The classes rely both on
contemporary literature, and modern teaching methods. We are proud of the fact that our
students have repeatedly participated in competitions in the Chinese language organized in
Serbia.
In addition to these courses the Chinese Center organizes other courses as well, such as those
on contemporary China’s economy and the system business operations. Also, in order to
promote the cooperation between the two countries, the following events were organized:
• The first fair of Chinese higher education in Serbia in 2013 on which occasion our university
hosted 13 Chinese universities which presented their programs at undergraduate, master’s and
doctoral studies to all interested visitors;
• the celebrations of the Spring Festival i.e. the Chinese New Year (2014, 2015 and 2016);
• the foundation of the Club of Sinologists as well as organizing a round table on the topic of the
“Challenges of Sinology in Serbia”
• lectures by distinguished professors and experts from China at our university.
In addition, one of the goals of the center is professional training of professors and students in
China. So far, three teachers have received scholarships for training in China. Students have
also been going to China in recent years, and 13 students have been to this country for
different forms of training so far. During the 2015 /2016 academic year four students from
Megatrend University went to study in China, three of which to master studies and one student
to a one-year program of Chinese language training.
Today the Chinese Center represents one of the most important projects of the Department for
International Cooperation of Megatrend University, which has clearly defined its current
development strategy – the internationalization. The objective of this phase is to increase the
mobility of students as well as the training and specialization of the teaching staff. Owing to this
strategy, nine students from China are currently studying Serbian within the Chinese Centre. In
addition to the large number of classes of Serbian language, the student have the opportunity
to obtain training within various specialist studies economics, business, cultural studies, etc..
The first phase of the Chinese Center development ends with the year of 2016, in which we
have positioned on the market, which has learnt about our capacity, our operations and our
possibilities. In the new stage of development, in addition to already established activities, we
shall also be organizing a large number of courses, expanding our cooperation with Chinese
and Serbian businessmen, and further improving our work.
